Books Learning — The Library Beneath X9Elysium

"Foundations matter. A startup messed up at its foundation cannot be fixed." — Peter Thiel, Zero to One

This folder is the second floor of the foundation. The credo (Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam), the five pillars, and the ten operating rules at /foundation are the values — what we believe. The books in this folder are the texts that pressure-tested those valueswhy we believe them.

Two books, more than any others, shape how X9Elysium picks clients, prices work, hires, refuses, and grows:

  1. The Almanack of Naval Ravikant — Eric Jorgenson, 2020 (curating Naval's writing & talks 2007–2020). Wealth, leverage, judgement, specific knowledge, and the long game. The mental model behind founder-led economics, rate-card-free pricing, and the refusal to scale headcount past trust.

  2. Zero to One — Peter Thiel & Blake Masters, 2014. How to build a durable business by going from 0 → 1, not 1 → n. The mental model behind the founder-led wedge, the deliberate small-but-deep client roster, the platform focus (Shopify Plus core + Odoo/WooCommerce as secondary tracks), and why we treat distribution as a first-class deliverable, not an afterthought.

A third file, Applied to X9Elysium, is the mapping doc — every principle from both books, cross-referenced to the specific pillar, rule, page, or pricing decision it informs.

TL;DR — The 12 lessons that actually moved decisions

If you read nothing else in this folder, internalize these. They are the load-bearing columns.

# Source Principle What it changed at X9Elysium
1 Thiel "What important truth do very few people agree with you on?" Founder-led wedge ("no juniors, no handoffs"). Most agencies disagree — they need leverage to scale. We picked durability over scale.
2 Thiel A startup messed up at its foundation cannot be fixed. This page exists. The credo + pillars + rules are not branding — they are foundation work that gets harder to retrofit later.
3 Thiel 10x better, not 10% better. Pillar 01: 40%+ revenue lift bar inside year one. We refuse engagements where the upside ceiling is incremental.
4 Thiel Last-mover advantage. We do not chase being the first agency to ship the new app. We aim to be the last partner a serious retailer ever needs.
5 Thiel Power law — focus on the few that matter. Rule of True Partnership. We say no to most inbounds. The few we say yes to get everything.
6 Thiel Distribution > product, when product is solved. The 6-month organic growth plan, llms.txt, the cornerstone-content cadence, the Instagram automation roadmap. We treat distribution as engineering.
7 Naval Specific knowledge — what you can't be trained for. Founder bios on /about + Person schema. We sell judgement, not hours.
8 Naval Play long-term games with long-term people. Rule of True Partnership + Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam credo. One family, one outcome, one shared ledger of trust.
9 Naval Leverage — code, media, capital, labour. We choose code + media (permissionless, infinitely scalable). We avoid labour (capped, fragile). This is why X9Elysium is two senior partners + frameworks, not 30 juniors.
10 Naval Earn with your mind, not your time. Pricing is by scope, complexity, and upside — not hourly. The Contact page sidebar literally says "value scales with project size."
11 Naval Escape competition through authenticity. The platform expansion (Odoo, WooCommerce) is not a pivot away from Shopify Plus — it is honesty about which platform fits which retailer. Competing on truth instead of pitch.
12 Naval Desire is a contract you make with yourself to be unhappy until you get it. Rule of Positivity Under Pressure. We do not import client panic. Equanimity is infrastructure.

How to read this folder

  • Just landed at X9Elysium and want the worldview? → Read this README, then the Applied to X9Elysium mapping. ~25 minutes.
  • Want to understand the Naval mental model in depth?naval-ravikant.md. ~45 minutes.
  • Want to understand the Thiel mental model in depth?zero-to-one.md. ~45 minutes.
  • Want a single page to cite when defending a business decision? → Pull from Applied to X9Elysium. Each principle has a one-line quote, one-line application, and a foundation pillar/rule reference.

Why these two specifically

There are dozens of books on building businesses. The two on this shelf were chosen because they answer two complementary questions, and together they cover the full operating model:

Naval answers: How should I structure my own life and time so the work compounds?

  • Wealth vs money vs status
  • Leverage and the four kinds of it
  • Specific knowledge that can't be commoditized
  • The long game with long-term people
  • Equanimity as a prerequisite for clear thinking

Thiel answers: How should the business itself be designed so it survives and matters?

  • Monopoly via differentiation, not competition
  • Definite optimism (have a plan; do not surrender to statistics)
  • Foundations are unfixable — get them right early
  • 7 questions every business must answer
  • Distribution is a product feature, not a separate function

A founder-led consulting agency lives or dies on both. Naval keeps the founder sane and compounding. Thiel keeps the business durable and differentiated. Skip either lens and the agency dies — either of burnout (no Naval) or of commoditization (no Thiel).

Updates

This is a living folder. New principles applied to X9Elysium get added to applied-to-x9elysium.md as decisions are made. If a principle here ever stops being honoured by the business, that is a signal to either change the business back or remove the principle from the doc — never both at once.
